Tree Falls, Kills Man at Mt. Ashland

A 41-year old man camping with his teenage son on Mt. Ashland was killed this morning when a tree fell on his tent. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office received the call at 5:30 a.m. The man was identified as Phillip Crosby. Authorities say the high winds resulted in the tree's collapse. The sheriff's department was assisted by Cal-Fire, ODF and Ashland Fire and Rescue.

Portland Lawyers Design "Driving While Black" App

Uber Fighting Eugene Fine

The online taxi business Uber, a company worth billions, is contesting a $2,000 fine issued by the city of Eugene, which says Uber should get a license. The Register-Guard reported Thursday (http://bit.ly/1up510X) that city lawyers contend Uber fits municipal rules requiring any vehicle that transports a passenger for money to get a "public passenger vehicle" license.Read More »

Winston Man Dies In Head-On Crash On Highway 42

The Oregon State Police say they are continuing to investigate a fatal head-on collision that occurred on Highway 42, 10 miles east of Coos Bay. Authorities say a BMW driven by 81-year old Robert Woldt of Winston crossed the center line for unknown reasons and collided with a Chevy Venture van. Woldt died in the accident.Read More »

Downed Power Pole Causes Fire At Gold Hill Home

A fallen power pole touched off a fire at a Gold Hill area home this morning. The strong winds toppled the pole that fell on to the roof of the house at 6:08 a.m. at 5932 Highway 234. The owners of the home were out of town, and according to a Medford Mail Tribune report, no animals suffered any harm. A passing motorist noticed the fire.Read More »
