Input Requested on Native American School Nicknames

Public comment is being taken until May 17 on a proposal the Oregon Board of Education is considering that would ban Indian mascots and logos at schools. The rule would force changes at 8 state high schools with teams known as the Indians, Braves or Chieftains. Seven other schools known as the Warriors would be able to keep that name as long as no Native American images were used. If adopted, schools would have until July, 2017 to change. Violators could lose state funding.
