Springfield Activists Rally Against Hate Crime
The reaction continues in Springfield to allegations that four young white people threatened a biracial teenager walking downtown on Memorial Day.
The Eugene Register-Guard reports community activists held a rally on Wednesday, and people who attended asked downtown business owners to post "Hate Free Zone" leaflets.
Police said they arrested a fifth youth, who admitted tipping off one of the suspects that police were looking for him. And police said they were still trying to identify who spray-painted swastikas and racist messages in a neighborhood where one suspect lives.
Earlier this week, prosecutors filed a felony hate-crime charge against a 22-year-old man identified as the driver of a pickup truck flying a Confederate flag. He and three teenagers were accused of yelling slurs and running after the youth.
