Sen. Wyden To Meet In Medford On Violence Against Women Act
Oregon Senator Ron Wyden will be making a stop in Medford Tuesday, July 3rd, to meet with local elected officials and advocates for a roundtable discussion on the renewal of the Violence Against Women Act. Enacted in 1994, the act is credited with helping women escape domestic violence. Its renewal is currently stalled in Congress, Wyden's office says.
Sen.Wyden will be joined by Beth Heckert of the Jackson County D.A.'s office, Gerry Sea from Jackson County Council Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, and Chris Mallete of Illinois Valley Safe Alliance. The discussion will examine the act's benefits and what are viewed as the consequences should it fail to be renewed.
The 10 a.m. meeting will take place at Community Works. Other key members of the community representing law enforcement and advocacy groups have also been invited.
