Police Report: No Holiday Traffic Fatalities in Oregon
If the preliminary numbers hold up, this 4th of July holiday will be the first since 1979 where no traffic fatalities occurred. The parameters for this year's holiday period ran from 6 p.m. Tuesday night to 11:59 on Wednesday.
Oregon State Police troopers report 19 DUII arrests during the 30-hour period, with nearly 90 percent occurring on the 4th itself. Last year's holiday period for the same holiday was 78 hours, and 110 drunk driving arrests were made then.
Three people died on Oregon road in 2011, typically the most deadly holiday period of any holiday during the year. Since 1970, over 300 deaths have occurred on Oregon roads.
