Teens More Likely To Try Drugs, Alcohol During Summer

A study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Division concludes teenagers are more likely to try marijuana for the first time during the month of June or July than at any other time of the year. First time alcohol use is more likely in June, July, and December.

Emily Moser is Parenting Program Director at Lines for Life- a non-profit group whose aim is to prevent substance abuse-says the culprit is more free time and less adult supervision. She advises parents that even if parents have talked before with their kids about the dangers of substance abuse, "keep talking." "Remember" Moser adds, "As a parent, you are the biggest influence in their life."
