Death Row Inmate Fighting Reprieve
An Oregon death row inmate who says he wants to die is arguing he doesn't have to accept the governor's reprieve. Last November Gov. John Kitzhaber blocked the scheduled execution of convicted murderer Gary Haugen on moral grounds, and said there would be no executions as long as he is governor.
But Haugen says he wants to die.
On Tuesday, arguments were heard in Marion County Circuit Court on Haugen's contention he does not have to accept Kitzhaber's reprieve. An attorney for Kitzhaber argued that Haugen has no right to decline it.
Haugen was sentenced to death five years ago after he was convicted of the 2003 killing of a fellow inmate. Haugen was then serving a life sentence for a 1981 murder.
