Jamaica Literacy Project
In a first of its’ kind educational effort, Southern Oregon University is sending a team of students to boost literacy in Jamaica. The group of students are partnering with Ashland based “Great Shape Incorporated” to teach literacy and computer education through the Jamaican Ministry of Education. SOU Special Ed instructor Gregg Gassman says it’s a good ‘hands-on’ exercise for future teachers to work in an environment with only a 30 to 40% literacy rate.
The eight SOU education students will be in Jamaica for a week teaching those from first through sixth grade.
