Water Sentencing Dispute

By Steve Johnson Fri 10th August News
More than a decade of water disputes has resulted in an Eagle Point man starting a 30 day sentence for storing water illegally.   63 year old Gary Harrington turned himself in for a 30 day sentence after losing three court cases for trapping water without a permit in three reservoirs.  A group of about 50 supporters turned out prior to his incarceration at the Jackson County jail.

Just before heading in for the 30 day sentence Harrington said he was ‘overwhelmed but not surprised’ at the public support adding that he is prepared to take the water rights case to the US Supreme Court if necessary.
Because of the case some like Sams Valley resident and land owner Bob Bowers are also voicing concern over the rights of property owners who also have ponds on their land.
The charges focus on the illegal storage of water, but Harrington says in his view it is a bigger issue of the personal rights of individuals as to what they can do on private land.
