State Homeless Student Count Down, Remains Significant in Southern Oregon

By Jim McCoy Thu 15th November Newshomeless teens
While the overall number of students classified as homeless is down in Oregon, according to a just-released report, the numbers are still high in southern Oregon. The Medford school district has the third highest number of homeless students in the state, behind Portland and Beaverton. In Butte Falls, one-quarter of their students are defined as homeless. The Prospect and Rogue River school districts also made the top 10 on a percentage-wise basis. The homeless classification does not necessarily mean the child is sleeping in a shelter or on the streets. The tag also applies to students who have unstable housing, such as bouncing between the couches of friends and relatives.
