Two Oregon schools - John Muir School in Ashland and Greenway Elementary in Beaverton - have earned recognition as a National Title I Distinguished Schools for 2012. John Muir is a K- 8 school with a focus on outdoor education, the natural sciences, and the arts. Despite having a higher proportion of low-income students than the state overall, the school consistently scores well above the state average in both reading and math. Greenway Elementary has been honored for closing the achievement gap for low-income and Hispanic students. The schools will be honored at the National Title I Conference in January and receive $5,000 awards. Associated Press
