Police say a man who traded shots with officers at a Roseburg motel is connected to the death of a 71-year-old man whose body was found inside his burned-out house.
Investigators said Wednesday that they were going to the motel to question 23-year-old Jonathan Lackey about the death of Richard Casebeer when Lackey opened fire with a pistol.
Casebeer's sister-in-law told the Roseburg News-Review that he was Lackey's grandfather.
Lackey surrendered several hours after firing the shots. He has been ordered held without bail on attempted aggravated murder and attempted assault charges related to the Monday shooting.
Dow says Lackey grew up in Florida, and spent about a year in the Roseburg area before leaving a year ago.
