Organizers of a petition drive to eliminate genetically modified crops in Jackson County have enough signatures that voters will get to decide on a proposed ban in the May, 2014 primary. 4,462 valid signatures were needed to put a measure on the ballot, and GMO-Free Jackson County gathered more than 67-hundred.
In the past, organic farmers have maintained that GMOs have contaminated their farms and threatens their certification. Proponents say GMO are more resistant to weeds and pests and produce better yields.
The measure makes exceptions for scientific research. It also calls for inspections.
