A man police killed at a Portland hospital has been identified as a 50-year-old with history of drug use and crime.
The Multnomah County medical examiner's office said Tuesday the man was Merle M. Hatch.
He was shot Sunday in the employee parking lot of Portland Adventist Medical Center. Police say he had threatened a hospital employee with a gun and pointed it at a security car.
His mother, Mary Hatch, told The Oregonian newspaper she and her husband last saw their son 15 to 20 years ago, and he appeared to have fallen on hard times.
Records show Hatch had a record of arrests for drug-related crimes, offenses in prison and a 2004 bank robbery conviction in Colorado.
