Arborists expect a ponderosa pine at La Pine State Park near Bend will reclaim its title as the largest ponderosa pine in the nation.
Portland arborist Brian French of the group Ascending the Giants climbed into the upper branches Saturday of the tree known as Big Red. He measured the height at 168 feet. The trunk as a circumference of 29 feet.
The Statesman Journal reports "Big Red" held the title as largest ponderosa until the 1990s when storms ripped away it upper branches. A California tree that held the title is now recognized as a Pacific ponderosa, another species.
Big Red is the largest officially measured tree classified as its species of ponderosa.
The American Forests association publishes its next National Register of Big Trees in April.
