Gov. John Kitzhaber says he's against a proposed tribal casino in Medford. The Medford Mail Tribune reports that Kitzhaber told the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs on Monday an expansion of casino gambling would be bad for Oregon and the Medford casino would violate an agreement to limit casinos to one per tribe. The Coquille Indian Tribe has purchased property in Medford for a casino to offer video gambling. The tribe already operates a casino at North Bend along the coast. The tribe has asked the Bureau of Indian Affairs to put the land in a government trust, a first step toward reservation status. The tribe called Kitzhaber's letter disappointing but not surprising, and it said the one-casino-per-tribe agreement has expired.
