The Oregon Pediatric Society reports the state leads the nation in immunization exemptions for kindergartners at 6.4 percent. Some parents cite concerns about side effects as one reason they will not immunize their child. Educators and health officials express concern about possible contagious illness outbreaks with such a high number of kids without immunization. The Oregon legislature is considering a bill that would require parents to watch an educational video or talk to their doctor before signing off on an exemption. Washington passed a bill that required a doctor’s signature before receiving an exemption. Since its passage, the number of exemptions decreased by 25 percent.
