A Medford Mail Tribune article says a Hedrick Middle School monitor has been relieved of his duties for his defiant stand regarding the carrying of a firearm on school grounds. Donald Later is a retired Jackson County Sheriff's deputy. Later was never seen carrying a gun, but when asked by his supervisor whether or not he was armed, Last said yes, and was placed on leave. Later was fired for insubordination.
He met with Medford School Superintendent Phil Long during spring break and requested permission to carry a gun on campus. After a review of policies, permission was denied. Later told his supervisor he still intended to carry a firearm.
Later is not a union member, and therefore could be fired without cause. He believed his status as a retired law enforcement officer and his concealed weapon permit entitled him to do so. When Later was hired had agreed when he was hired not to carry a weapon on school grounds.
