Thousands of Pot Plants Seized In Oregon Forest

Authorities say they seized about 3,000 marijuana plants from sites in the Willamette National Forest over the weekend after jailing 16 people. Lane County sheriff's Sgt. Steve French told the Eugene Register-Guard the marijuana was in terrain inaccessible by regularly maintained trails and not visible from roads. He says the plants were watered from lines concealed under vegetation. About 40 local, state and federal officers removed the plants on Sunday. A helicopter provided by federal agencies made multiple trips, hauling out plants in a net. The Register-Guard said the weight was estimated at 9,000 pounds to 10,000 pounds, and the haul was one of the largest in Lane County. French says a tip to the U.S. Forest Service led to an investigation. The 16 people arrested were booked Friday.
