A Central Point cheesemaker has become the state’s first “Benefit Corporation.” Rogue Creamery is one of 29 companies registered with the state of Oregon to incorporate a social and environmental agenda in addition to profits, and they were the first to be recognized as such. In addition to recycling the company has undertaken increased a public transportation theme for employees, water conservation and solar energy use. The designation also protects companies against legal complaints by shareholders that the benefit company isn’t solely focused on profits. Across the United States, Oregon is one of 20 states establishing benefit corporations although there are no tax benefits for companies who receive the designation.
