Kitzhaber: Oregon Should Challenge "Growth Beliefs"

By Jim McCoy Wed 22nd January NewsGov. John KitzhaberOregon economy
Gov. John Kitzhaber says Oregonians should be willing to challenge the belief that economic growth always leads to an improved quality of life. The Bulletin newspaper reports (http://bit.ly/1jnDE6M) Kitzhaber appeared Tuesday at a forum in Bend aimed at examining the balance between livability and economic growth. Kitzhaber and first lady Cylvia Hayes touched on their visit last year to the Himalayan kingdom Bhutan, which has adopted "Gross National Happiness" to measure its citizens' quality of life. Kitzhaber said Oregon has added 65,000 jobs since the end of the recession, mostly at either high or low wages. He said Central Oregon may have wonderful mountains and lakes and "really good beer," but those don't mean much to struggling people who would benefit from larger investments in affordable housing and public transit.
