Schools in Medford face a strike at 6 a.m. Thursday, while teachers in Portland take a strike vote Wednesday night.
The Medford Mail Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1fvdoCc ) a strike there could involve up to 600 teachers.
Bargaining was resuming Wednesday after daylong talks Tuesday. The two sides agreed not to talk about the negotiations. Earlier in the week, the two sides said they hadn't agreed on major items such as salaries, health insurance premiums and working conditions,
The district said that absent a contract by Wednesday afternoon, it would close schools Thursday. It is looking for more substitute teachers to fill in.
In Portland, the state's largest district, The Oregonian reports (http://bit.ly/1cVoUbT ) a strike vote could lead to a first-ever walkout as soon as Feb. 17. The union represents 2,900 teachers.
