Double Fatal Crash On I-5 South Of Canyonville

A truck mechanic and a passenger in a commercial truck were killed in an accident along Interstate 5 northbound near milepost 90, south of Canyonville. The names of the deceased have not yet been released. A 54-year old roadside assistance mechanic was working on a disabled truck parked on the shoulder at around 11 p.m. He was standing between the truck and his vehicle, a Ford F350 truck. A 2013 International truck pulling an AutoZone semi-trailer driven by William Dean Penicks, 56, of Norco, CA., was traveling northbound cresting a hill in the right lane. For an unknown reason, the truck crossed the fog line and crashed into the back of the disabled truck trailer. The impact pushed the disabled truck and trailer forward, pinning the mechanic between the disabled vehicle and the roadside assistance truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A 43-year old passenger of the disabled truck was in the sleeper berth at the time of the collision and he was also killed. The driver of the disabled truck was outside his vehicle was not hurt. An investigation in ongoing.
