Portland police say a man an officer fatally shot near a high school on Wednesday was a suspect in a January kidnapping and in bank robberies. The police said Thursday the man's name would be released after an autopsy is performed and his relatives are notified. The wounded officer was identified as John Romero, a school resource officer. He was hit in the arm and hand. He was treated Wednesday evening at the hospital and reported resting comfortably at home on Thursday. Romero and two other officers were near Wilson High School investigating reports of a van following young people. Police said Romero and the man exchanged shots.
