As Josephine County struggles to keep up with the law enforcement needs of the community, they have put the call out for volunteers to help with criminal investigations. This would include crime scene processing, and background investigations.
According to the Grants Pass Daily Courier, the sheriff's department is getting volunteer help to staff substations, court security, outreach and jail security. Using volunteers to work crime scenes would be unique. Sheriff Gil Gilbertson says the development of the program is in its early stages, and it's not yet known what the timeline would be to get it rolling.
District Attorney Stephen Campbell says he supports the idea, though he is concerned about the scrutiny a volunteer CSI would face from a defense attorney. He would prefer that a volunteer's findings would be handed over to a sworn deputy.
