A Medford man was arrested Thursday afternoon, accused setting a fire at the back of a house on W. 9th St. A witness reported seeing someone set a fire at around 4:39 p.m., and the witness being spraying water on the fire with a house while calling police.
Another witness helping the first witness put out the fire saw the suspect return to the scene- this time accompanied by a 6-year-old girl riding a razor scooter. When the suspected was identified by the first witness, the second began following the suspect and called police.
An officer passing the scene on patrol took notice of the suspect running away. 29-year old Gregory Stabile was caught, arrested and placed in Jackson County Jail. The child was returned to her mother.
Detectives say there is no link between Stabile and Debra Johns, the woman arrested last week for a string of Medford arsons. Police say Stabile is a suspect in several other arson fires around town.
The fire caused damage to two structures. Authorities say had it not been for the quick action of the two witnesses, the damage could have been much worse.
