Long standing medical group closes

Financial irregularities, debt and declining membership among younger doctors are behind the closure of the Jackson County Medical Society.

For 90 years, the society has supported doctor networking, provided scholarships for medical students,  and helped fund impoverished patients, but at the time of closure it had debts of between $60,000 and $80,000, on an annual budget of nearly $200,000.

Society President Dr. Erich Webber said that operations lacked oversight, day to day expenses were not paid, and some older loans were not properly paid off.

The society’s long serving executive director, Debra McFadden, was fired last spring.
