The Medford Police Department is warning local residents – especially seniors – of an old scam with a new twist. Steve Best explains…

A Medford resident recently reported being contacted by what she thought was an FBI representative over a Publishers Clearinghouse Sweepstakes she had allegedly won several years ago.

When she expressed doubt about the validity of the call, she was told someone from the local Police Department would call her.

The scammers used a real Medford Police Department name, and were able to spoof the caller ID to make it appear the call was coming from Medford.

As a result, the resident then wired several thousand dollars to a South American country. Medford police are urging senior citizens not to wire any funds outside of the U.S. and to contact them if in doubt.
