There’s a warning out to keep an eye on elderly people in our community who might be neglected or vulnerable during the holiday season. Steve Best has details…
The Oregon Department of Human Services says we should all be on the lookout for signs of self-neglect and abuse among elderly neighbors.
Fred Steele, manager of DHS Community Adult Protective Services says self-neglect and elder abuse is often under-reported because people do not know how to recognize the signs.
These signs include abandonment by the caregiver, emotional or physical abuse and involuntary seclusion.
Over 27,000 cases of elder abuse were referred to the DHS in 2010.
