District Chief Financial Officer Brad Earl says the district paid more than $2 million to keep schools open during the strike, but still came out ahead on the budget. The Medford Mail Tribune (http://is.gd/3Cmvqt) says Earl reported the figures at Monday night's school board meeting. The money will be transferred from the district's general fund to a special revenue fund where it can be used for student-related purchases and facility maintenance projects. The newspaper says student-related purchases include $40,000 in new ovens for South Medford High School's culinary classroom and $250,000 for 500 Chromebooks for students to use, primarily for online testing. Another $382,000 will go for curriculum software. http://www.thedove.us/news/2014/04/23/medford-school-district-plans-purchases-money-saved-during-strike#comments News Medford School District strike Wed, 23 Apr 2014 19:12:30 +0000 Jim McCoy 7432 at http://www.thedove.us A Live Look From theDoves New Home http://www.thedove.us/shows/featured/live-look-thedoves-new-home <div class="field field-type-emvideo field-field-video-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="emvideo emvideo-video emvideo-youtube"><iframe id="media-youtube-html5-1" title="YouTube video player" class="media-youtube-html5" type="text/html" width="630" height="366" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/8O7fakdxBL4?autoplay=0&rel=0&hd=1" frameborder="0" allowFullScreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> A Live Look at theDove's New Home on day two of our Spring Sharathon. http://www.thedove.us/shows/featured/live-look-thedoves-new-home#comments Featured Wed, 23 Apr 2014 19:10:23 +0000 admin 7431 at http://www.thedove.us Police: "Move Over" To Avoid Distracted Driving http://www.thedove.us/news/2014/04/23/police-move-over-avoid-distracted-driving <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-story"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="filefield-file"><img class="filefield-icon field-icon-image-jpeg" alt="image/jpeg icon" src="http://www.thedove.us/sites/all/modules/filefield/icons/image-x-generic.png" /><a href="http://www.thedove.us/sites/default/files/images/sheriff moves-gfx copy_2.jpg" type="image/jpeg; length=11990">sheriff moves-gfx copy.jpg</a></div> </div> </div> </div> The Oregon State Police and Jackson County Sheriff's Department say they are continuing efforts to increase awareness and save lives during "Distracted Driving Awareness" month by conducting a joint enforcement operation between Medford and Gold Hill. Thursday (tomorrow) police will be monitoring Interstate 5 between mileposts 27 and 40 for distracted driver violations. Oregon law prohibits cell phone use or texting while driving. Police also remind motorists that according to the "Move Over" law passed in 2003, that if they are driving up behind or next to any kind of emergency vehicle, a roadside assistance vehicle or a tow vehicle along the side of the road with emergency lights flashing, that they must move over to a non-adjacent lane when there are two or more lanes going in the same direction OR slow down to a speed five miles per hour lower than the posted speed limit if changing lanes is not safely possible. Many law enforcement officers and emergency workers report having numerous "close calls" while helping the public alongside roadways. Many violators of the "Move Over" law say they weren't aware of the law, though it was passed over 10 years ago. http://www.thedove.us/news/2014/04/23/police-move-over-avoid-distracted-driving#comments News Wed, 23 Apr 2014 19:08:36 +0000 Jim McCoy 7430 at http://www.thedove.us Tuesday Night Stabbing Results In Teen's Arrest http://www.thedove.us/news/2014/04/23/tuesday-night-stabbing-results-teens-arrest <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-story"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="filefield-file"><img class="filefield-icon field-icon-image-jpeg" alt="image/jpeg icon" src="http://www.thedove.us/sites/all/modules/filefield/icons/image-x-generic.png" /><a href="http://www.thedove.us/sites/default/files/images/CarstensLucas.jpg" type="image/jpeg; length=56470">CarstensLucas.jpg</a></div> </div> </div> </div> A stabbing incident in Medford Tuesday night resulted in placing one man in the hospital and a teenager in jail. According to police, 18-year old Lucas Ivan Carstens was one of a group of people allegedly confronting a 39-year old neighbor in the 200 block of Elm Street for being loud. When the man went outside, the group confronted him and attacked him. The victim later realized he had been stabbed several times. He was taken to the hospital by a witness. He is in stable condition. An investigation led police to Carstens, and more arrests may be forthcoming. http://www.thedove.us/news/2014/04/23/tuesday-night-stabbing-results-teens-arrest#comments News Lucas Ivan Carstens stabbing Wed, 23 Apr 2014 18:50:43 +0000 Jim McCoy 7429 at http://www.thedove.us Toddler Ingests Meth, Parents Arrested http://www.thedove.us/news/2014/04/23/toddler-ingests-meth-parents-arrested <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-story"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="filefield-file"><img class="filefield-icon field-icon-image-jpeg" alt="image/jpeg icon" src="http://www.thedove.us/sites/all/modules/filefield/icons/image-x-generic.png" /><a href="http://www.thedove.us/sites/default/files/images/burglary arrest-gfx copy_40.jpg" type="image/jpeg; length=15553">burglary arrest-gfx copy.jpg</a></div> </div> </div> </div> Two Roseburg parents who took their 2-year-old to the emergency room because she was acting abnormally have been arrested after tests showed methamphetamine in her system. Sheriff's Office spokesman Dwes Hutson says investigators found drug paraphernalia with meth residue in the home, and they concluded the child got into the drug on her own. He says her condition is not believed to be life-threatening. There are two more girls in the home, ages 10 years old and 5 months. The state Department of Human Services is involved in the case. The parents are 40-year-old Michelle Burke and 44-year-old James Pohl. They were booked on charges of child neglect, endangering the welfare of a minor, and methamphetamine possession. http://www.thedove.us/news/2014/04/23/toddler-ingests-meth-parents-arrested#comments News child ingests meth James Pohl meth Michelle Burke Wed, 23 Apr 2014 18:43:36 +0000 Jim McCoy 7428 at http://www.thedove.us Wimbledon Winner Honored In Hometown http://www.thedove.us/sports/2014/04/23/wimbledon-winner-honored-hometown His victory speech at Wimbledon was easy compared to this. Andy Murray broke into tears Wednesday as he accepted a civic honor in his Scottish hometown of Dunblane. Murray, who was granted "the freedom of Stirling" from the local council, stopped to compose himself and wipe his eyes several times during the ceremony at Dunblane High School. His voice cracking, he said, "I think everyone knows I'm extremely proud of where I come from." Murray said "moving away was one of the sacrifices I had to make for my job and every time I come back it's quite emotional." He told the crowd: "I apologize for this behavior." Murray's parents, grandparents and girlfriend Kim Sears were among those in attendance. He also received an honorary degree from the University of Stirling. http://www.thedove.us/sports/2014/04/23/wimbledon-winner-honored-hometown#comments Sports Andy Murray Dunblane freedom of Stirling Scotland Wed, 23 Apr 2014 18:09:47 +0000 Jim McCoy 7427 at http://www.thedove.us Knicks Team President Jackson Won't Coach Team http://www.thedove.us/sports/2014/04/23/knicks-team-president-jackson-wont-coach-team The coaching search is on in New York, and the best possible candidate has already been eliminated. Phil Jackson won't be hiring himself to coach the Knicks. Two days after firing Mike Woodson, Jackson reiterated Wednesday that he won't be returning to the bench, despite the fact that even fiancee Jeanie Buss told him he should. But Jackson says his body isn't up to doing the job. He retired from coaching in 2011 after winning an NBA-record 11 titles. So the new team president says he's looking for a leader with the personality and charisma to succeed in New York. He hopes to talk with Steve Kerr, the TNT analyst frequently mentioned as the leading candidate, sometime within the next month. http://www.thedove.us/sports/2014/04/23/knicks-team-president-jackson-wont-coach-team#comments Sports New York Knicks Phil Jackson Wed, 23 Apr 2014 18:05:51 +0000 Jim McCoy 7426 at http://www.thedove.us Children's Ministry Conference - Medford http://www.thedove.us/events/2014/04/23/childrens-ministry-conference-medford <div class="field field-type-datetime field-field-date"> <div class="field-label">Date:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <span class="date-display-start">Wed 23rd April</span><span class="date-display-separator"> - </span><span class="date-display-end">Sat 10th May</span> </div> </div> </div> Cascade Christian High School, 855 Chevy Way in Medford is hosting the 'Next Gen Ministry Conference' on Saturday, May 10, 9:00 am - 3:30 pm.
