Southern Oregon Sports Journalist Dies at 34

The Grants Pass Daily Courier sports editor has died at age 34. Larry Cathey's wife, Linsay, told the newspaper (http://bit.ly/1bUgFcQ ) that he died Saturday at home after battling colon cancer. A Michigan native, Cathey spent five years at the Daily Courier, starting as a sports reporter. He became sports editor in February 2012. He started his career as a stringer at the Detroit News, and worked at newspapers in Paris, Texas, and Hugo, Okla. He won best sports story in the 2012 Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association awards for a story about a University of Michigan football player wearing the No. 11 of Al Wistert, a Grants Pass resident who was an NFL All-Pro in the 1940s. In addition to his wife, Cathey leaves an infant daughter, Samantha Rose.
