Supercross is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year and everything about the sport is bigger and better than it was when the series started with four races in 1974.
The tracks are bigger and have more jumps in one straightaway than the entire early courses. The motorcycles are more powerful and smoother-riding than the bone-jarring bikes of the 1970s.
The riders have become some of the fittest in any sport, many using personal trainers to stay in shape.
The crowds have also grown, averaging 850,000 per year, and coverage will increase this year with a new TV deal with Fox 1 and 2.
The 40th season of Supercross kicks off on Saturday, when Ryan Villopoto kicks off defense of his three straight titles in Anaheim, Calif.
