The South Medford Panthers boys advance to play for fourth place Saturday at the Oregon 6A basketball tournament in Portland. Brayden Massey scored 23 points to lead South to a 71-60 victory over Central Catholic.
South rallied from a one point halftime deficit. The Panthers shot 17-21 from the free throw line. Tomorrow, the Panthers will play the winner of the game between Sunset and Clackamas.
In the 4A tournament, North Valley advances to play for fourth place by defeating Skyline Conference rival Henley 61-55. Chris Morsa led the Knights with 23. North Valley awaits the winner of the game between Seaside and Cottage Grove.
In the 5A tournament, Eagle Point was not as fortunate. Jorge Quintero scored 21, Cesar Chavez added 17, but it wasn't enough as Wilsonville made a late rally to defeat the Eageles 52-45. Wilsonville held a 24-16 edge in rebounds and enjoyed a huge edge in free throw shooting, converting 25 for 26 from the charity stripe, while the Eagles made three of only four attempts for entire game. Eagle Point concludes a successful 2013-14 campaign with a 21-5 record.
This afternoon, the South Medford Panthers girls look to make their third straight trip to the 6A finals when they take on Beaverton at 1:30 pm. The winner will take on the winner of the Oregon City- Westview game. Coach Tom Cole's Panthers won the 2012 state championship.
