By Jim McCoy Tue 18th March SportsArena League FootballPortland Thunder
Arena football returned to Portland as the Portland Thunder played their debut game against the San Jose Sabercats at the Moda Center Monday night. Unfortunately, the Thunder couldn’t keep up with the scoring pace of the Sabercats, losing 64-34. Former UO star quarterback Darron Thomas started the scoring when he carried the ball in from the two yard line. San Jose came back with three straight scores to lead 20-7 before Portland could score again. The score was 37-27 at halftime and the Thunder would score only once more in the second half. Attendance was announced at 8,509. Arena football was previously played in Portland when the Forest Dragons played here three seasons, from 1997-99.
