Hanley Farm Welcomes: Kirsten & Christopher Shockey–Fruit Pressing Skills

October 6, 2019 @ 11:00 am - October 7, 2019 @ 4:00 pm

Best-selling fermentation authors Kirsten and Christopher Shockey will share their fruit pressing
skills at the October Annual Scarecrow Festival at Hanley Farm. The Shockeys have co-authored several
books, including the best-selling Fermented Vegetables, and share their passion with others as they teach
worldwide, and host workshops on their 40-acre homestead in Southern Oregon. We invite you to meet
the Shockeys, sample their apple juice, and bring your own fruit to press!

In addition to sampling Shockey’s apple juice, be sure to take a ride in the infamous 1946
“Amphibious Fire Engine.” Rescued from the Ashland Creek in 1948, in the spring of 2017 the engine
was donated to the Southern Oregon Historical Society. Dedicated volunteers restored the engine,
returning it to its former glory. You may have seen the engine at the Ashland July 4 Parade, at other
local events, or at Hanley Farm where it’s housed between events. Children of all ages have delighted in
climbing on the fire engine, honking the horn, ringing the bell, operating the siren and wearing a real
fireman’s helmet!

And of course, make your own scarecrow. If you haven’t made a scarecrow before, don’t worry.
Hanley Farm volunteers will be happy to help you! When completed, you can take your scarecrow
home, or enter it to the People’s Choice contest. You might be the winner! There will also be wagon
tours, Historic Hanley House tours, and food available for purchase from “Crepe Me.” Entrance to the
Festival is free, but some activities have a charge.
